When families usually do Rahu puja
- During Rahu Mahadasha (18 years in the Vimshottari system) or a Rahu antardasha.
- When a kundli reading shows a Rahu placement the family wishes to pray about.
- Many traditions prefer a Saturday; the pandit confirms the muhurat from the panchang.
Rahu kaal is traditionally avoided for new auspicious work, while some pandits choose it for Rahu jaap, so leave the timing to the pandit.
The vidhi in brief
- Purification and sankalp.
- Ganesh puja, kalash sthapana and navgrah puja.
- Invoking and worshipping Rahu (south-west in the navgrah mandal).
- Rahu mantra jaap, then havan with durva.
- Aarti, kshama prarthana and daan, as you are able.
Mantra and traditional remedies
ॐ भ्रां भ्रीं भ्रौं सः राहवे नमः
The jaap is usually counted on a 108-bead mala; a pandit can advise the jaap count. Traditional remedies are simple and optional: regular jaap, worship of Devi Durga or Lord Shiva, daan of urad, black til or a blanket as you are able, and steady, honest conduct. Gemstones are not required.
