What is Shani Sade Sati and Shani Mahadasha Puja?
Shani (Saturn) is the graha tradition links with discipline, patience, hard work and justice. Sade Sati is the period of about seven and a half years while Shani moves through the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign and the sign after it. Shani Mahadasha is the 19-year Shani period of the Vimshottari dasha system.
Many families offer a Shani puja during these periods as a prayer for patience and steadiness. Saturdays are traditionally kept for Shani.
When families usually choose Shani puja
- During Shani Sade Sati, often at its start or in the middle phase.
- During Shani Mahadasha or a Shani antardasha.
- On a Saturday or Shani Jayanti, as per family tradition.
How the puja is traditionally done
- Sankalp: the pandit takes the name of the person the puja is for, the gotra if the family knows it, and the purpose of the puja.
- Ganesh puja and kalash sthapana: as per tradition, every puja begins with Lord Ganesh.
- Main puja and mantra jaap for the deity or graha the puja is offered to.
- Havan, aarti and daan, as the vidhi requires.
The pandit explains the exact vidhi, the mantra jaap and anything you need to arrange when you book, before you pay.
