What is Havan and Jaap?
In a havan, the pandit lights the sacred fire (agni) in a havan kund and the family offers samidha, ghee and havan samagri into it while mantras are chanted, ending with purnahuti.
Jaap is the chanting of a chosen mantra a fixed number of times with a sankalp. Havan and jaap are often done together, for an occasion or as a prayer for peace in the home.
When families usually choose havan and jaap
- For griha pravesh, a birthday, an anniversary or the start of a new venture.
- As a prayer for peace and well-being in the household.
- To complete a jaap the family has taken up, as per tradition.
How the puja is traditionally done
- Sankalp: the pandit takes the name of the person the puja is for, the gotra if the family knows it, and the purpose of the puja.
- Ganesh puja and kalash sthapana: as per tradition, every puja begins with Lord Ganesh.
- Main puja and mantra jaap for the deity or graha the puja is offered to.
- Havan, aarti and daan, as the vidhi requires.
The pandit explains the exact vidhi, the mantra jaap and anything you need to arrange when you book, before you pay.
